The Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand Anand Vardhan chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday with key national scientific institutions including the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), and Central Water Commission, to address landslide mitigation strategies in the state.

During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the challenges and solutions related to landslide risk reduction across Uttarakhand. The Chief Secretary emphasized the urgent need to identify landslide-prone areas across the state and develop a comprehensive prediction model.

He directed that a mechanism should be created which, using satellite imagery and ground-based testing, can accurately forecast landslide risks based on rainfall levels in specific areas. “This will allow us to evacuate people from vulnerable regions in advance and ensure their safety,” he said.

To achieve this, the Chief Secretary instructed the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Geological Survey of India, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, and the Central Building Research Institute to work jointly and initiate large-scale and immediate efforts in this direction.

Additionally, the Chief Secretary entrusted the Wadia Institute with the responsibility of installing sensors in 13 glacial lakes across the state. As a first step, sensors will be installed in six of the most sensitive lakes, following satellite and ground-based assessments. He further emphasized the importance of exploring ways to reduce the vulnerability of these glacial lakes.

To support this mission, the Wadia Institute will receive assistance from key institutions such as IIRS, GSI, Central Water Commission, and USAC (Uttarakhand Space Application Centre). The Chief Secretary assured the Wadia Institute that there will be no shortage of necessary funds for this critical work.

Prominent attendees at the meeting included Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman, IG SDRF Arun Mohan Joshi, UCOST Director General Prof. Durgesh Pant, along with senior scientists and officials from Wadia Institute, IIRS, GSI, Central Water Commission, and other relevant bodies.
